What is Psoriasis?

Home Remedies for psoriasisPsoriasis is an autoimmune disease that appears on the skin. It occurs when the immune system mistakes the skin cells as a pathogen, and sends out faulty signals that speed up the growth cycle of skin cells. Psoriasis is not contagious. However, psoriasis has been linked to an increased risk of stroke. There are five types of psoriasis: plaque, guttate, inverse, pustular and erythrodermic. The most common form, plaque psoriasis, is commonly seen as red and white hues of scaly patches appearing on the top first layer of the epidermis (skin). Some patients, though, have no dermatological symptoms.

Psoriasis Heat Causes:

  1. Psoriasis is caused by an abnormal response of the immune system which results in inflammation.
  2. Even though this condition is not contagious, it could be aggravated by certain factors such as changes in the climate, infections, skin diseases or injuries, excessive consumption of alcohol, smoking, sun exposure, anxiety or stress and certain medications.
  3. Family history of psoriasis or skin diseases
  4. Living in cold and dry climatic conditions
  5. Unhealthy eating habits
  6. Stressful life situations such as death in the family, divorce, unhealthy relations within the family and job changes could be some of the other causes of psoriasis.

Psoriasis Symptoms:

  1. Inflamed red patches of skin that can generally be seen on the trunk, knees and elbows, but may also appear on other parts of the body.
  2. Joint pain, genital lesions in the case of men, changes in the color and texture of the nails and severe scalp dandruff.

Psoriasis Prevention Tips:

  1. Making sure that the patient eats nutritious well balanced meals full of fresh vegetables, fruits and foods that are good sources of essential fatty acids.
  2. In case of overweight patients, ensuring that the patient follows a prescribed weight loss diet as excess body weight can worsen the symptoms of psoriasis.
  3. Patients should be made to exercise regularly to strengthen their immune system.
  4. Ensuring that the patient avoids eating spicy foods, curds and excess salt as this can increase skin inflammation.
  5. It is also very important for care givers to ensure that the patient maintains good personal hygiene to reduce the risk of any other bacterial and fungal skin infections.
  6. Do not bath too much. Always dry your body with soft clean towel after bath.

Psoriasis Home Remedies:

  1. Almond: Almond powder boiled in water, cooled and applied on the affected skin overnight is very helpful in relieving some of the symptoms of psoriasis.
  2. Sandalwood: A paste of sandalwood powder, water and rose water is also useful in treating psoriasis symptoms.
  3. Banana leaf: Cover the psoriasis rash with a thin banana leaf.
  4. Lime juice: A mixture of water and lime juice can also be applied on the patches of skin affected by psoriasis.
  5. Garlic: Garlic helps in purifying the blood and therefore eating a few garlic cloves everyday can help flush out impurities from the body and protect against psoriasis.
