Most often, sore throats are due to different viral infections and tend to get better within a week or even less. You need to consult a doctor if you have a sore throat which is severe and causes pain when you swallow, or when you have fever. A bad sore throat which needs medical intervention can also lead to an earache or sore joints. A Strep throat needs antibiotics and thus cannot be treated at home.  Sore throat remedies can be ineffective if you are suffering from strep throat or any other bacterial infections.
